Legality

Playing rummy online at RummyTablePro is legal in India, except for players in Assam, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Sikkim, Nagaland, Meghalaya, and Odisha. The Supreme Court of India, in 1968, classified rummy as a game of skill. This classification has been reaffirmed in numerous judgments by the Supreme Court and various high courts. In a significant 1996 ruling, the Supreme Court stated that while chance cannot be entirely excluded, games like golf, chess, and rummy rely predominantly on the player’s superior knowledge, training, attention, experience, and skill. The courts reason that few games are purely based on chance or skill; hence, a game where skill outweighs chance is identified as a game of skill.

Is playing rummy online considered gambling?

No.

In two landmark cases from 1957, the Supreme Court ruled that competitions involving substantial skill do not constitute gambling. Such activities are considered business ventures, protected under Article 19(1)(g) of the Indian Constitution. The Court clarified that a game of skill is safeguarded by this constitutional provision, and therefore, any profits or gains derived from skill-based activities cannot be labeled as gambling.

However, in Assam, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Sikkim, Nagaland, Meghalaya, and Odisha, playing for cash is prohibited. RummyTablePro does not permit players from these states to engage in real money games, though they can still enjoy practice games for free.
